Many fonts have extended characters, which simply means there are more characters than you see on your keyboard. You can access these characters in three ways. Using the instructions here and the chart above, you too can make weird looking names—oh wahoo and yippee! If the characters don't show up when you try it, try using a standard font such as Arial or Times New Roman. Most free fonts and many commercial fonts don't have extended characters.

How to use ASCII Characters

  1. For HTML use enter the numeric entity shown under the HTML heading into your page code and it will show up in a browser the way you see it in the Makes column. Be sure to include the &# at the beginning and the trailing semi-colon.
  2. You can also type it in directly using the Alt key on your keyboard and the numbers pad. The numbers pad is the one on the right side of your keyboard, not the numbers above the letter keys. To do this, press down and hold the Alt key, and on the numbers pad type the number you see in the Ascii # column, then release the Alt key. If that doesn't work, add a 0 (zero) in front of the number.

Note: This isn't as reliable as the previous method. Some character entities may not show up. Depending on the browser, it will either show an empty rectangle like this: ...or if you didn't see the empty rectangle, it will show a blank space.

  3. The third way is to use the character entity name, which I don't show here. They are odd and hard to remember, it's easier just to refer to the number. The names are things like Æ and &brvbbar; ...and besides, many don't have entity names so quit being silly!
There now, you have to admit, this is a page with a lot of character!
