The Real Secret to Success

To succeed, we're told we need to set goals. We need to work hard. We need to think positive. We need to learn from our failures. We need to . . . blah, blah, blah.

While those are all good qualities to cultivate, they are only attributes of a greater power.

I'm going to share the real secret to success with you today.

In fact, what I'm about to share with you is the secret to everything.

All the hopes and dreams you have. All the things you want to do and have in life. They all depend on this one secret—it's the Master Key to everything you want.

The secret is . . . your mind.

The decisions you make and the actions you take all start with a thought. Everything that's ever been invented, written, and spoken all started in the thought realm.

We live our entire lives inside our mind. We can focus our attention on external things, but the awareness and recognition of all external things takes place in our mind.

What we feed our mind determines how successful we will be in life. What we feed our mind determines if we will be, do, and have all we want.

To make the most of our life we need to feed our mind two things:

  • Great ideas: The quality of our thinking will increase or decrease in direct proportion to what we feed our mind on a consistent basis.
  • The right attitude: Attitude is a choice, not a result of circumstances. We will go as high and far as our thoughts take us.

That's why our mind is our secret weapon. It trumps all other success factors.

We all have the potential for greatness—whatever greatness means for you—but we must prepare for it. Greatness comes when preparation meets opportunity.

Spend some quiet time alone with your thoughts. Improving our thinking takes practice—just like any other skill. And yes, thinking is a skill, and like any other skill it can be improved with practice.

Here's something few understand . . . thinking isn't the same as having a thought. Thinking is what you do after you have a thought. It's probing that thought to see what else is hiding inside your mind.

In other words, having a thought is an invitation to explore your mind. It's a doorway to actual thinking.

In those quiet times of reflection when you explore your thoughts, also reflect on your attitude. To paraphrase Thomas Jefferson:

Nothing can stop a person with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help a person with the wrong mental attitude.

There are always higher levels of consciousness we can reach. Make a commitment to seek knowledge and wisdom for all your life and you will not be disappointed when you look back through time.

Life is opportunity.

We do not find ourselves looking outward, or discover ourselves without looking inward, nor are we led to ourselves by another. There is no one that completes our puzzle . . . we are who we design ourselves to be, whether by intent or by indifference.

We create ourselves every moment of every day. We choose who we become by the choices we make, or fail to make.

artist Think of yourself as an artist. Each day is your canvas. You can paint each day with whichever colors you choose. Your personal evolution is your life artistry. Try to make a masterpiece of as many days as you can.

Of course, many days, maybe most days, won't turn into masterpieces, but enough will. By making a masterpiece out of as many days as you are able you'll create a life that is a work of art.

It's important to always think for yourself. Question everything. In a world that fights tooth and claw to tell us what to think, what to do, who we should be, and what we should desire, only those with a strong sense of self-identity are able to dance to their own music.

Everyone else follows the piper.

Finding your own voice, your own truth, is to honor the gift of life you've been given. We must each build our house of wisdom on our own foundation of thought. To do otherwise is to sacrifice our mind to others.

There are two questions you can ask yourself throughout your life that will help you to find the best road to travel.

Who am I becoming?

It is a question that drives our personal evolution.

By the trail of our choices we will become who we have chosen to become day-by-day. Causality suggests it cannot be any other way (causality, sometimes called the law of cause and effect, is one of the most fundamental and essential ideas in physics).

What is the best response right now?

In difficult situations, asking ourselves this question and thinking it through gives us a positive course of action. It calms intense emotions, kindles a flame in the darkness of confusion, and helps to bring us home to ourselves when it seems we're being pulled asunder by external forces.

I wish you all the success in the world, but more importantly, I hope you enjoy the journey. Standing on the mountaintop for a brief moment in time will be very disappointing if we didn't enjoy the travels along the way.

Feed your mind, it's hungry!

Ever notice how curious small children are? They thirst for knowledge. That curiosity never really leaves us, we just grow indifferent about seeking the answers.

Life becomes hectic, but our mind still craves knowledge and wisdom. Feed it, and it will reward you with better ideas, better thinking, and better results.

At the same time, remember, our greatest rewards are not found in what we get, but in who we become. Dare to be yourself. Be as colorful as you want to be.

Taste a great diversity of thought . . . but be careful of what you swallow!

Happy trails.
