HTML Legend Tag

Browser Support

Internet Explorer Firefox Opera Safari Chrome

The legend tag provides the caption for a fieldset element. A fieldset allows you to group elements together, such as thumbmail images, icons, form fields, etc.

If you look at the fieldset example below—the legend is the part that reads Fieldset Legend.

Fieldset Legend Name:

Email:

Here's the code for that simple fieldset:

<fieldset>
<legend>Fieldset Legend</legend>
Name: <input type="text">
<p>
Email: <input type="text">
</p></fieldset>

The fieldset and legend can be fancied up nicely using CSS. An image can be substituted for legend text as well.

For an example of using an image with a fieldset legend, view the product page for Public Domain Profits and scroll to the bottom and see the fieldset for ordering the Public Domain Profits ebook. The legend is an image.
