CSS Letter Spacing
Wow, you must be a control freak wanting to control the amount of space between the letters of words!
Just kidding . . . a little. Anyway, in typography this is called kerning, in CSS it is called oatmeal . . . um, I mean, letter-spacing.
Here’s how to code the space between letters:
I use it on this site to add 1-2 pixels of spacing in my heading tags, depending on which the heading size. It can also be useful if there's a font you use that has letters that get too tight at smaller sizes, or if there's just a font you like that is too tight.
It can also be used to close the gap on fonts that have too wide of letter spacing. Check out these three samples:
This is just some text to fill the space. You should keep reading it because sometimes I write profound things.
This is more text to fill more space. You should keep reading because I really may write something profound.
This is just some text to fill the space. Nothing profound this time, but aren't you glad you didn't miss anything?
You can see how adding or subtracting just one pixel of space can make a difference.
OK, I'm feeling kind of like the king pooper at a party because I didn't share anything profound with you in those demonstation blocks where I teased it ot. So . . . I will now. Copy and paste the black blob below into a text editor to reveal my secret message of wisdom for you.
Words of Wisdom: It's wise to taste a great diversity of thought. It's even wiser to be careful of what you swallow.
